Field of Slobs: “MAJOR League Baseball’s All-Star Game, which took place on July 11 in Pittsburgh, has always featured an endearing crazy quilt of colors and insignias, because the players wear their respective team uniforms instead of a generic outfit for each squad as in football and basketball. Unfortunately, the quilt has been a bit less crazy in recent years than in decades past, because most of today’s players wear their pant legs all the way down to their shoe tops. Of this year’s 64 All-Stars, only five — Ichiro Suzuki, Barry Zito, Jim Thome, Alfonso Soriano and Brad Penny — routinely hike up their pants to expose a once-crucial element of the baseball uniform: the colored sock.
If you think baseball hosiery isn’t important, think again. Back in the early days, when uniform pants were essentially knickers, stockings were the primary way for a team to show its colors. Note that we don’t have teams called the Blue Caps or the White Pants — we have the White Sox and the Red Sox. And during the McCarthy era, when the Cincinnati Reds were concerned that their team name might be associated with Communism, the team’s owners officially changed the club’s name to the Redlegs — a name that wouldn’t work today because not a single Red exposes his hose.
But don’t blame the players. The real fault lies with Major League Baseball’s higher-ups, who are legendarily persnickety about everything from sleeve lengths (must be standardized within a given team) to handwritten cap inscriptions (forbidden under any circumstances) but have allowed pant cuffs to migrate southward with nary a peep, with disastrous results for the game’s hosiery heritage.
So what can be done? Plenty. Little League coaches can teach their players how to cuff their pants up high. Weekend softball players can do it themselves. And fans could reward players who know the proper way to wear a uniform when next year’s All-Star Game voting rolls around.
And don’t give up — history has a tendency to reward the faithful. After all, the last two World Series champions were the Red Sox and the White Sox.” (By Paul Lukas for The New York Times) Lean Manufacturing and the Importance of Cycle Time - July 17-18, 2006 – Cary, NC: Join [TC]²’s 2006 Student Interns for this two-day program discussing short cycle manufacturing’s important role in today’s environment and participate in the Penville Plant™ hands-on activity. Supermodel Kate Moss just landed another lucrative endorsement this time as the new face of lingerie maker Agent Provocateu.
The label's owner, Vivienne Westwood's son Joe Corre, told the Daily Mirror:
"Watch out for something in September that is huge – but top secret for now."
Moss's income is thought to have increased almost three fold from about 15 million dollars before her cocaine scandal last year to somewhere around 40 million dollars today. Some of her recent contracts include Virgin Mobile, Roberto Cavalli, Calvin Klein, Rimmel, and Nikon.
Ashlee Simpson scores with Victoria's Secret but does Victoria's Secret score with Ashlee Simpson?
With some of the most beautiful women in the world to choose from it is a bit hard to believe that Victoria Secrets would settle on Simpson. Jessica Simpson's younger sister has reportedly signed up to become a Victoria's Secret model and the face of a new collection called Pink aimed at younger women.
Victoria's Secret models in the past have included Gisele Bundchen, Heidi Klum, Adrianna Lima, Petra Nemcova, Ana Beatriz Barros, Claudia Schiffer, Carmen Kass, Laetitia Casta, Karolina Kurkova, Stephanie Seymour, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, Elle Macpherson, and Tyra Banks.
A recent study released by The Telephia Mobile Game Report found that 65 percent of mobile game revenue is due to female wireless subscribers who comprise 72 percent of the total share of revenue.
Men made up 28 percent. The top three games were Tetris, Tetris Deluxe and Bejeweled.
2006 marks the 60th anniversary of the bikini. The infamous two piece swim suit was considered scandalous when it was introduced in 1946.
It was so explosive that it was named after the Island of Bikini where the first atomic bomb was tested.
French designer Louis Reard could not get any models to wear it and had to hire an exotic dancer. Three weeks earlier another French designer, Jacques Heim, introduced a two piece swim suit that he called The Atome.
Heim received the official credit in the history books but Reard's name stuck.

U.S., Russia Work to Conclude WTO Accession Agreement
According to National Security Council officials, the U.S. and Russia may be able to reach agreement on Russia’s WTO accession prior to this weekend’s G8 summit in St. Petersburg. In remarks to the press, senior administration officials acknowledged that there are a number of tough issues that still need to be resolved, particularly in the areas of intellectual property rights and agriculture.
CITA Seeks Comments on AGOA Short Supply Request
The Committee for the Implementation of Textile Agreements is seeking comments by July 27 on a short supply request received July 5. The petitioner alleges that certain combed and ring spun yarn, of a 92% cotton/ 8% cashmere blend, comprised of 2/32 Nm resulting in a 16 Nm yarn count, classified under HTSUS 5205.42.00.20, cannot be supplied by the domestic industry in commercial quantities in a timely manner. The petitioner is therefore requesting duty- and quota-free treatment under the African Growth and Opportunity Act for men's knit sweaters made of the subject yarn.
CPSC Seeks Comments on Clothing Textiles, Vinyl Plastic Film Information Collection - The Consumer Product Safety Commission is seeking comments by Sept. 11 regarding the proposed extension without change of the information collection requirements associated with the regulations implementing the Standard for the Flammability of Clothing Textiles and the Standard for the Flammability of Vinyl Plastic Film. These regulations prescribe requirements for testing and recordkeeping by firms that issue guaranties.
The CPSC uses this information to help protect the public from risks of injury or death associated with clothing and fabrics and vinyl film intended for use in clothing. More specifically, the information helps the CPSC arrange corrective actions if any products covered by a guaranty fail to comply with the applicable standard in a manner that creates a substantial risk of injury or death to the public. The CPSC also uses this information to determine whether the requisite testing was performed to support the guaranties.
CITA to Hold Meeting on DR-CAFTA Short Supply Request
The Committee for the Implementation of Textile Agreements has scheduled a July 19 meeting regarding a DR-CAFTA short supply request filed by Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg. This request alleges that certain woven 100% cotton flannel fabrics in a variety of thread counts, weights and widths, classifiable under HTSUS 5208.52.30, 5208.52.40 and 5209.51.60, cannot be supplied by the domestic industry in commercial quantities in a timely manner.
CITA notes that although the meeting is open to all interested parties, its purpose is to allow the interested entities to provide additional evidence to support the claims and information previously submitted to CITA. At any time, CITA or the interested entities may request a closed meeting to discuss business confidential information.
PENDING EXPIRATION OF TWO U.S. PREFERENCE PROGRAMS COULD SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACT IMPORTERS & EXPORTERS
Importers and exporters who benefit from two U.S. trade preference programs should act now to prepare for the probable expiration of those programs on Dec. 31. It is regarded as unlikely that the Generalized System of Preferences and the Andean Trade Promotion and Drug Eradication Act will be renewed or extended by Congress before they expire. Retroactive renewal of one or both programs is possible sometime in 2007, but any such action would likely impose dramatic changes in product and country eligibility. While renewal is not guaranteed, the nature of future changes could be affected by providing input to the annual GSP review by the July 20 deadline.
Both GSP and ATPDEA provide significant benefits. GSP provides duty-free entry for more than 4,650 products from 144 beneficiary countries and territories, although most textiles, watches, footwear, handbags, luggage, flat goods, work gloves and other leather apparel are excluded. GSP imports exceeded $26.7 billion in 2005 and have increased another 19% so far this year. ATPDEA provides duty-free access to about 5,600 products from Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru and was amended in 2002 to cover many previously excluded products, including certain textile and apparel articles.
Instructions on DR-CAFTA Implementation for Guatemala. CBP has published an administrative message (06-0790) providing instructions to CBP personnel and the trade community on the entry of goods from Guatemala under DR-CAFTA. A June 30 presidential proclamation allows merchandise from Guatemala that is entered, or withdrawn from a warehouse for consumption, on or after July 1 to be eligible for DR-CAFTA benefits. CBP notes that Guatemala's eligibility for DR-CAFTA terminates its eligibility for Caribbean Basin Initiative, Generalized System of Preferences and Caribbean Basin Trade Partnership Act benefits.
Exporters’ Textile Advisory Committee to Meet Aug. 30. The ITA has announced that the Exporters' Textile Advisory Committee will hold an open meeting on Aug. 30 at the MAGIC trade show in Las Vegas. This committee advises DOC officials on the identification of export barriers and market expansion activities. The ITA states that with the elimination of the WTO quota regime, it is committed to encouraging U.S. textile and apparel firms to export and remain competitive in the global market.
Federal Agencies Implement DR-CAFTA Government Procurement Provisions
The Department of Defense, the General Services Administration and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration recently issued an interim rule, effective June 28, which amends the Federal Acquisition Regulation to implement DR-CAFTA with respect to El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. (DR-CAFTA took effect for Guatemala on July 1; a separate rule will be necessary to amend the FAR to reflect this development
According to the agencies, DR-CAFTA waives the applicability of the Buy American Act for some foreign supplies and construction materials and specifies procurement procedures designed to ensure fairness in the acquisition of supplies and services. The excluded services for DR-CAFTA are the same as for the Chile FTA and NAFTA. For supply and service contracts, DR-CAFTA has the same threshold as other FTAs ($64,786), except the Morocco FTA and NAFTA, with respect to supply contracts involving Canada. For construction contracts, DR-CAFTA has the same threshold as the Chile, Morocco and Singapore FTAs and the WTO Government Procurement Agreement ($7.41 million), which is lower than the NAFTA threshold of $8.42 million.
Comments on this rule are due by Aug. 28
